Hello anyone willing to help, i have a 240 volvo im wondering if its possible to swap the engine from my 88 mitsubishi. Its a 4g54 engine and i have the transmission for it along with everything else. Im just wondering if A, is it possible for an amatuer mechanic to do and B, is it a good idea? And also what will i need of anything extra? Again thank anyone in advance 😊

 

you'll need the wire harnesses and all the engine related electronics (ignition, fuel injection) from the mitsubishi, and you'll need to design engineer and fabricate a custom set of motor+transmission mounts, then a custom length drive shaft. oh, and the 'senders' for the dashboard instruments are probabyl calibrated differently (coolant temp). if its not a 4-cyl, the tach output will be wrong (if you have a tach). If the EFI uses a significantly different fuel pressure, you may need to change the fuel pumps, too. you'll likely need to fabricate a custom exhaust system, or splice the Volvo cat and back onto the Mitsubishi headers and downpipe. Ditto adapt the fresh air path (or use hokey racing air intakes that don't filter very well).

sure, it can be done. is it a good idea? that's entirely your call. NO mechanic will want to work on a frankencar like that, so it will be all yours to maintain and repair.

 

Thank you very much! I think i have the understanding to do all of these things but i ended up trading the mitsubishi for a chrysler conquest that also runs and drives already so ill probably not do the swap anymore but i apprecuate you very much!

 

Put a Chevy in it. Then you can join the Volvo V8 club.

Actually, we have some discussion on engines swaps lately and I personally have a shell of a Volvo 244DL that will need an engine and trans to get it back on the road. The body on this car does not have a single dent or flake of rust anywhere. It has never been in an accident and it doesn't even have any parking lot dings in the doors. But somewhere before I got it, someone decided that they should use this car as a parts donor. The best that I can figure is that someone must have looked at the completely failed paint job and figured the car was ready for the scap yard. And honestly, the paint is absolutely horrid! It's just gone.

I'm glad I got to them before they did that. They sold me the car for a little more than the scap yard was offering and I came and got the car. So they didn't even have to figure out how to get rid of it. I paid $175 for it and it came with a clean title.

So this will be my V8 Volvo and I'm really looking forward to seeing it back on the road.
