Is this 240 a good buy?
$3000 for a 1988 240 4 door sedan. 160xxx miles. 5 speed. my moms friend has owned a volvo his whole life and test drovethis oneand said it will run forever...he said its just broken in.im new to volvo and i was wondering if this would be the right car for me? The only thing i dont like is the coloring style...really light blue exterior...almost a pale silver..and a mustard yellow interior...ya its ugly but clean.
The Blue Book Value on that car is at best $1700 dollars. There is no doubt that Volvo's will run forever but keep in mind that this car is almost 20 years old; it will probably need some stuff. 3k is definately a bit steep.
Any 240 I think is a good buy but the dollar amount is a little high. I got my 240 DL wagon for $1000 and have put in about $1500 so I consider it a steal. It seems like it's in good shape, but still . . .
i got my 89 for 600, put about 800 into it, the one your looking at is way overpriced. they are smoking something. you can do better pricewise, or wait it out, when they realize they can't get that much for it then you go in for the kill and buy new seats
I'm not sure I agree with some of the prices you all are saying you would pay for that Volvo. It's a stick, of which are hard to find and quite worthy in the long run. I think the $1700 estimate is pretty close to what that car would bring on ebay and probably worth every penny of it. That is if it's rust free and doesn't need a clutch. I had to have the clutch replaced on my 240 and it came to a whooping $750...BUT, it was original and made it to 200K miles, so in the long run I feel the sticks are worth more then the automatics. Just my opinion all.

Hi shoptown. I am curious to know if you actually got the silver blue Volvo. The reason I am writing is that 5-6 days ago I was in Sydney Nova Scotia and waiting at the light in the opposite direction was a volvo, silvery blue sort of with light mustard interior, so I thought of you. It actually was not ugly at all and looked quite elegant, in excellent shape. I tried to pull a u turn to see it better and maybe talk to the guy, but traffic and road work intervened.
Good luck with the car if you do get it.
