Default 240 no codes, not even a 1-0-1

I have a 90 240 dl. Main issue: I can not make it give me the diagnostics codes. I followed instructions.

Turn Key ON

Insert to Plug 2

Press 5 seconds.

Light comes on only while the button is depressed, but no flashing. Tried the same thing is plug 6, same result.

Help please, new to volvos....... and the internet for that matter.

Welcome to the forum.

You are pressing the button for 5 seconds but it should be between 1 and 3 seconds when entering diagnostic function 1.5 seconds is for erasing codes.

You can find a full how-to at: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/cha...c&start=12

This is titled for the 740 but the basics are the same for the 240, 740, 760, 940 and 960.

Just tried it again, trying with justs a 1 sec push to get into the diagnostic mode. Light on when I push it for one second, then nothing. I would guess the ecu? I have electrical power, wipers come on and the like, but not a peep out of the starter.

Try unplugging the ECM and reconnect then see if you can pull codes.

Alright I tried that too. I also checked and I have no burned fuses.

The ECU was replaced a couple months back and the car started twice, then failed again.

Now, if I am not getting any LED flashing or light at all (except when I press the button) should I assume that the 20 dollar ebay ecu that was used as a replacement is not working at all?

Can I get into it and check for anything?

...this car was a freebe, but I know it is a good car if I can just get it going down the road.

Have you gone through the other checks on pages 5/6 of the how-to? If not, try them before condemning the ECU.

I have a Haynes Repair Manual.

The thing is, I can retrieve NO CODES. I mean, not the no codes series of blinks, but none at all. ...sure makes me think that the computer is not reachable. I don't know what to do next.

Is there a link somewhere for the owners manual for the pages you are refering to?

I have also cleaned all the fuses, and their contacts on both sides, none of which were blown.

Is there an online resource for the publication in which the "pages 5/6" refers to?

TIA.

check for power and ground. No electrical circuit will work without power and ground.
