Default 240 side pocket query...

Greetings! I have a Volvo 240 and you all know about the fragile door pockets. The thing is, I could have sworn I saw a soft pocket once for that. It was either an after market item or a deluxe option. Either way, I searched almost everywhere online and could not find a trace of it anywhere. Has anyone else seen those? They were a great alternative to the plastic ones and I am interested in replacing mine.

Soft pocket would be interesting if they do actually exist. The ones on my 740 are held together by black duct tape. Though, it's hardly noticeable unless you really pay attention.

Those are on the luxury models, like the Bertone's, or GLE's possibly. Early model 200's and such...

Mine are all cracked as well. IPD sells a cover that goes over top of them, instead of full replacement. Just an idea.

After passengers broke 2 pockets, I took unbroken ones and laid fiberglass matting with resin on the inside where it does not show. It made them substantially more rigid and I (they) haven't broken one yet. Five years ago, a pair of unbroken pockets would cost upwards of $80 but with the flood of parts onto eBay since then, they can often be had for half that. I have not seen IPD's overlay for the pockets, but if the quality and fit is similar to their overlay for the dash...I do not want 'em.

I had seen the dash overlays in the IPD catalog and wondered about them. Glad to have read your feedback.

Please tell us how thick the fiberglass mat was that you used. Or how many layers of cloth would be equal to what you used. I assume it is still in place? Thanks for the additional info and the opportunity to comment.

IPD used to sell a 240 door pocket cover/reinforcement that worked pretty nicely. frankly, when ours broke, I took them off entirely, one less thing to worry about.
