Welcome.

You might need a new battery. How old is the current one?
Also maybe get the Alternator tested?
Most auto part stores can test the battery and alternator for you.

If it dies when the cables are removed then the alternator isn't charging.

Definatly alternator. On older cars the batter just sarts it. If you unhook the jumper cable or the battery and it dies then the alternator is toast.

SoI placed a brand new battery and a new alternator in it. Then drove for aprox. 50+ miles. Everything went well untilI got close to home. Then the abs light came on and the lights started dimming. Upon arriving home it wouldnt restart. Anyone have any ideas. I have heard of the tail lights being problems. My 240 has a broken 3rd Brake light in the rear window.

Hey sizzle,

Go take your car to an auto parts store and have them check the alternator, not for the alternator being bad, but for the proper voltage coming off the alternator when running.

I had similar problems to yours and it ended up that the alternator belt was not at a proper tension. I tore my hair out after having replaced the alternator, the battery ground wires and still experiencing it dying. I took it to a friendly mechanic who himself had no answers until he double-checked the tension. Since then it's been charging fine.

Also during this trying period I checked the alternator wires leading back to the battery and to ground as these are routed under the engine and through an area that, I was told, has caused chaffing of said wires.

Good luck with it all.

won't start as in won't turn over, or won't start as in something else got cooked?
