Default 240DL - NOT STARTING

Hoping someone out there can help on this. An intermittent starting problem (along with poor idle) that has become NO START. Consider the following:

1) Car cranks perfectly well

2) Car starts fine - after a shot of starter fluid into the air cleaner housing

3) Suspected faulty fuel pump so replaced (without checking circuit unfortunately)

4) Still does not start - fuel pump does not work - wiringis intact, fuses okay, etc. Disconnected and cleaned all connections under the hood to be certain of good contact.

5) Chilton's manual is of virtually no use as it does not describe how the CPU, ignition module, etc. interface with each other. It seems as though whatever component controls electrical current to the fuel pump at the proper time may be what was intermittently not working previously (and now is just plain dead).

My question is does anyone have an idea of what component may be faulty (and where it is / or how I can identify it to have it tested)? Car is a 1989 with only 176,000 miles on it so it is certainly good for a few more....

Thanks,

Default 240DL - NOT STARTING

Gene,Moms 92 940 DL 4 cylinder timing failed because the roll pin that fastens the cam gear to the cam shaft sheared off. had plenty of fuel & ignition but would not start for obvious reason. Had a professional mech. whom i grew up w/ tell her the engine was hopelessy worn out.... @ 90K... give me a break! $ 220 worth and he claims he spent a week working on it. Check your timing.

Thanks, Gregory. I appreciate the reply and offer. I won't be able to give you a ring but should be able to take care of the codes okay here. Had a '75 140 that had a distributor go bad (car would idle and rev to about 1300 rpm but no higher) and know what you mean about it killing the car. New distributor and it ran just fine. In this case that is not my problem as a shot of starter fluid and the motor fires right up.

Regards, Gene
