Default 244 B200FT throws out occasional smoke from exhaust

Hello!

I've swapped my 1982 244 engine for a B200FT. The problem is when the engine gets hot, it can throw an occasional white smoke from the exhaust (looks like oil smoke). I have not yet managed to identify where it comes from and althought it would be greatly appriciated if anyone here has an idea how to diagnose it.
It happens only when the engine is hot and when I come to a stop. No weird noises or anything like that. Seems to me like the oil slowly drips somewhere and then enteres the exhaust manifold and evaporates. When the engine is hot, it does not constantly smoke while driving, just does it occasionally when stopping.

The mechanic who inspected the engine pre-installment said that the turbo seemed old and a bit worn out but it still holds boost and the power does not cut out. Could it be a worn out turbo or something else?
I'll gladly provide additional info if needed.

Thank you,
Karl

A a general thought, it could be one of a few things - turbo seals, valve seals, rings or flame trap. Pull off the intake tubing going into the throttle body to see if there's any signs of oil there - if so then its either the turbo or PCV. If not thenrings or valve seals come to the top of the list - but that's assuming its consuming oil and not coolant or running rich (say due to a leaky injector). How often do you need to top off the oil or coolant? How's the MPGs? If you aren't adding more than a quart every 1000+ miles then I'd say you're doing ok for a 40 year old car!

Thank you for the reply and great information.
I'll see when I have the time to take off the intake tubing to check for oil and update the status here.

The coolant doesn't seem to be leaking at all, haven't needed to top it off yet. It is consuming oil tho, I'd say more than a quart for 1000 miles but I've only filled it up once because I don't drive it daily, it's more of a seasonal hobby car so a bit harder to keep track. The same with MPG, have no idea how much it consumes since it doesn't have the built-in indicator but I'll try to keep track of it now.

if the car is new to you, you may want to do a compression test as well (read up on wet vs dry testing) to get a sense of the fitness of the rings. You didn't mention how many miles but I'd suspect they are tired :-( or the valve stem seals are hard as a rock. Not sure if its accessible or if the turbo is set up similar to the 850Ts where you can pull off the intake air tube and reach in and see how much side to side play there is on the turbine. Rebuilding the turbo is doable and seal kits run for under $50 for most models - check Youtube for vids
