Default 42 psi fuel pressure...

My 1992 940 NA Regina FI stumbles on acceleration. A fuel pressure test showed that the system bumps up to 20psi with the key in the II position. When the car is started it bumps up to 30psi and the needle bounces around a lot. Giving it some gas will cause the needle to steady out but it stays around 30psi. After the engine is shut off the pressure will hold at 30psi and very very slowly increase...is that weird?

I've read/heard that the pressure should be closer to 42psi. Is that correct?

You need a new fuel pump! This scenario is common with fuel pressure drop and causes stumble on acceleration.

There's a 940 regina at the pnp. Im gonna go pull the fuel assembly from it. I don't know if it's good but it's priced at 30 bucks and I can use the practice.

I've already taken the air intake, iac valve and map Sensor. These Regina cars don't seem to show up often at the pnp.

Good luck with that. All the junkyards around me pull the gas tanks out prior to placing the cars in the yard. EPA regulations, I believe.

It's there...I had no problems with it yesterday except for the lock ring being stubborn. I don't have the special tool for it and my work arounds didn't work. I might try again today.

This pick n pull has a list price for gas tanks that says the tank may be punctured. For some reason every rear seat cushion is messed up on these cars at this yard.

There is a sign at the checkout that says they can't sell catalytic converters but nothing about gas tanks.

I use a wood board like a 1x4 or 2x4 and a hammer to get that bung ring off, a little bit at the time, it comes. And you don't care if you mangle the thing since you are at the JY, right?

Cushions are bent because the JY geniuses look for change and such under the seats...

I used the wooden handle of a rubber mallet and beat on the head of the mallet with another rubber mallet and it eventually gave way.

After I got the assembly out i could see a hole in the gas tank.

Now it's time to work on the car that counts.

So I pulled the fuel pump assembly from my car while waiting for the new one to arrive ($400...most expensive part I have ever bought for anything).

I noticed that a good portion of the wires at the pump were bare. And they snapped off with just a little bit of jostling.

The fuel pump i pulled and bought at the jy from a 1992 940 with regina fi is different from the fuel pump on my 1992 940 with regina fi.

I guess it doesn't matter since I've got the whole assembly being shipped to me...but thought i would mention it.

The pump on the right is from the jy and is a bosch.

Put the new fuel pump assembly on the car....turned the key on off several times...and I get no fuel pressure at all.

WTH...the pressure line to the pump did come off the old pump assembly easily and seems to go on the new one maybe too easily. The write up on this job at Volvoclubuk.org has been really useful. It says the connector on the pressure line should compress but it don't seem to give much.

Any ideas?

Are you sure the pump you got from the JY was from a Regina system and not a Bosch? Given that it has a Bosch label makes me wonder. In the Bosch fuel injection, the in-tank pump is just a feeder pump for the main pump. It will not build pressure at all.

I am positive. From the same car I also pulled and bought the map sensor...iac valve...the Regina coil...and the air intake duct with the air temp sensor. I've only found 1 jy here in central Ohio with the inventory posted online so i only deal with them. These old redblocks don't show up often and the Regina cars even less...so i bought what was different From my '89 744 parts car with the bosch fi. I posted the pics because i thought it was weird. maybe that's why that car was in the jy.

Anyway...I got the car running. Apparently its possible to plug the electrical connection in backwards. And thats what i did. I reversed the connection and the system pressurized to 40psi with 2 turns of the key. Drove it down the road with no hint of any stumbling.

Now i need to figure out why it's shifting late....always something...
