is that car Regina or Bosch LH 2.2 ?

if its Bosch LH, there's some acceptable substitutes here. you need to know if your car has EGR or not, etc. https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Eng...ReferenceChart

if its Regina, afaik, you can only use another of the same part number Regina ECU, and noone has compiled a list of these.

then if your ECU is a 0 280 000 XXX where XXX is 541, 544, or 554, you can use any of those 3 ECUs, which might be found in a 240 or bosch 740 from 1985-1988. if you have a 511, then the table I linked doesn't give any substitutes, but its still quite possible any of those others are interchangable (these tables aren't perfect). afaik, 240's are all bosch, while 740's can be bosch or regina. 740/760/780 turbos are also bosch lh 2.2 in those years and may well have interchangable ECU's.

these ECU's are generally really reliable, are you SURE yours is bad? 1986 is a bad wiring year (1982-1987), you could have crusty flaking insulation in wiring main harness, which would cause all sorts of erratic behavior

your car should run as optimally as it can with the stock ECU. what are the symptoms you're trying to fix ? its a 2.3L 4-cyl from the mid 80s, that won't run as smooth as some modern V6 or whatever, but it should idle steadily and rev just fine, within the limitations of the stock about 115 horses...

What do you mean by "run better". If your car isn't running properly, post what your problem is and the folks here will be more than happy to help you to diagnose and fix it - most likely without swapping ECUs. If you are trying to make more horsepower, then you might want to try Turbobricks where they talk about all kinds of ways of making more horsepower.

I wouldn't put too much hope in swapping ECUs to make this car run "better"! ECUs rarely go bad and if they do, they don't do what you are trying to cure. Blaming the ECU is an easy way to blame the evil "computer" for undiagnosed problems.
