Default 740 non turbo wagon transmission issue, help!

Hi all I'm new to forum, have replaced a leaking rear seal on the engine and have how got it all back together and it won't engage any gear (it's the Aisan auto) the tranny was working perfectly before the rear seal job! I have the correct fluid type and it's at the correct level on the dipstick!! The revs rise slightly when I engage any gear and they drop when the car is in park or neutral, but no gears engage at all!. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Peter

Linkage connection? RPMs should DROP when in gear, RISE in P or N...

Yeah I thought that too, but I'm pretty sure I put the linkages back on correctly! I have been also advised that if the torque converter emptied that would stop any drive, I'm wondering if it will it fill by itself when the car is running?

when the engine is idling in neutral, the transmission should be pumping ATF through all of it. if it was completely drained, it would likely take several passes to fill it

Your tranny pump will refill but keep your tranny in park and continue to check the dipstick until full before attempting to drive.

is the fluid level still between the bars? it should just take a couple minutes to move the fluid all through the system.

You never said you drained the tranny when first fixing your seal issue but if filled back again after ten minutes in Park, I have to believe that either your linkage isn't hooked back up properly or an electrical connection wasn't reconnected or firmly attached.

the only electrical connection on a 240/740/940 transmission is the park/neutral/reverse switch at the shifter lever, and the overdrive solenoid at the transmission. disconnected OD solenoid would still shift through gears 1-2-3 as normal.

Thx Pierce for clarifying.
Seems strange that it now, doesn't work at all. Almost seems like the engine shaft isn't locked on the the converter. Don't think that could happen if bolted up properly.
I'm also a Ford guy with an F-250 and an Expedition and with those, wiring harnesses are a must for the electronically controlled solenoids.
Thx again.

yeah, the newer volvos (and the Volvo 960) use electronically controlled transmissions, but the AW70/71 used on 240/740/940 are strictly hydraulic, the shift linkage is a simple mechanical arm, throttle pressure is communicated via a bowden cable.

I would check the following things:

1) Is the shifter linkage connected. Put it up on jackstands and have someone shift through the different positions while you check the linkage underneath.

2) If linkage is fine, check to see if the the transmission is pumping. Disconnect one of the transmission lines that runs to the radiator. With the engine idling, see if it pumps fluid through the line. Use a clean container to collect any trans fluid so you can reuse it.

3) If you don't get any oil through in step 2, then remove the access plate on the bottom of the bell housing and make sure that the torque converter is properly bolted to the flywheel.

If it passes all three - is your drive shaft connected?

Removed the ATF oil lines to the radiator and with the engine running, not a drop to be seen coming out, so it appears my fluid pump is either not engaged or stuffed!! What are my chances to remove the tranny again and re-engage the torque converter, will it be successful or have I already stuffed the ATF pump in your opinion?? Thanks

Did you check step 3? Check to make sure that the bolts that connect the flex plate to the torque converter were installed.

Did you pull the torque converter with the transmission? It sounds like the transmission shaft is not hooked up to the torque converter even though it is bolted to the flex plate. If you pull the rear transmission cooler pipe and start it up are you pumping TF out of the tube. Converter not locked onto the transmission.

I pulled the cooler pipes from where they go into the radiator and no fluid was coming out of the pipes with the engine running. Thanks for the reply
