740 occasional stalling
Hi everyone.
I am new to the volvo family with a relatively new purchase of a 1991 740. it ran sweetly for about 2 months, then started to stall occasionally, mostly when slowing down. after a couple of minutes it would start up fine again. problem started to happen more and more and the time it needed to start up again increasing. My dad put new plugs, dist and rotar arm in, and it still happened, so he took it to a garage who fitted a new coil. it still happened after this although less frequently, usually after about 15-20 miles or so and will fire up again after a few minutes. Took it to another garage who have shrugged their shoulders, saying it might be temperature related as it usually starts up again. I have read some posts and replies on here mentioning in tank pump and fuel relay. because it cuts out without spluttering i thought it was electrical rather than fuel? but i am no mechanic. any advice is greatly appreciated, could fuel still be an issue? thanks a lot.

RE: 740 occasional stalling
I would start with the crank position sensor and the fuel pump relay.

Bubba's advice is good. Gremlins are hard to pinpoint though. Also try a new air filter. Then, put a timing light on it and check to see if the mark moves, which means the rubber dampener on the crankshaft pulley is deteriorating. Also, it may be that the timing belt is slipping.
