Default '82 245 - fuel gauge bouncing, thermometer gone haywire, running like ****

Hello everyone I am new to the forum and not sure where to start.

My 245DL runs but is very loud. There is a small exhaust leak after the header and it makes the car sound like a diesel (Maybe this dieseling is something else?). At idle, the car seems to run fine although the idle is somewhat fast. It's been like this for the two years I've owned it, but has still run fine and been a decent beater of a wagon.

Recently I took it up to highway speeds and the thermometer went down as I went faster. The Fuel gauge was flapping about even with full gas in the tank... and it seems like fuel supply is getting cut off somehow. I have to press the accelerator twice as hard and it is getting no power at highway speeds. It's as if it has a broken fuel pump relay (but only at speed).

So I pulled off the highway and let it idle... the temp gauge and fuel gauge go back normal. i start off again. 40, 50, 60 mph. All of the symptoms come back.

Where do I even begin? O2 sensor? Electricals? Some obscure vacuum line? Something in the fuel system?

multiple gauges going nuts sounds like dashboard grounding or wiring or similar issues.

No power at highway speeds sounds like a bad in-tank fuel pump. Check this link. Lots of good info on how to check your in-tank pump:

In the Tank - 240 Volvo Tank Pump and Sender

As Pierce said, all of your gauge weirdness sounds like loose connections or bad wires. I'd pull the instrument cluster and check all of the connections on it. Also, make sure all of he ground posts under the dash are tight.
