Hmmm. Volvo mechanic in the middle of the mountains??? Maybe I could hoist it in a tree with my 48 Power Wagon. Just Kidding. I think I can handle the swap out. Most likely pull the whole kit and caboodle in one shot so that I can clean the crap out of it and do the Timing belt, water pump and gaskets all at the same time. This car has seen better days(Drive line wise that is) But what a cool lil 244

hmmm. you said thats an 83, I think before I invest any time on it I'd verify that the engine wiring harness is in decent condition.... there was a bunch of years in the early-to-mid 80s where the insulation was crap, and deteriorates with age... you'd pull back the wrapper on a wire bundle and discover all the insulation is just flaking off.

True, it was like that on the 88 245 that I did the first motor and trans swap, however I looked this one over rather well, keeping in mind to check for the copper strands of death, and it looks solid with not a bit of deterioration. Check out my photo gallery, the car has a near perfect interior and every gauge and light functions flawlessly.

You might get lucky after getting the fluid to the correct level but you would still have to deal with the leak.

According to the Bentley manual the flexplate (driveplate) and the torque converter are connected with 4 bolts. During separation, the torque converter stays with the transmission and the flexplate stays with the engine (crank). Besides the bellhousing bolts there is a reenforcement plate connecting them together.

Okay!!! I filled fluid levels and was able to drive the car forward and reverse, But it seems that it never shifted up, and the passing gear never engaged even with the throttle crammed to the floor. I did notice a strange growl from the transmission and a grinding noise coming from the rear brakes. Looks as though I will be dropping it anyways, and then checking the brake system.

I have another issue, can I just change the companion flange or do I need to change the output shaft assemble when I drop the other trans in?
