If it won't fire with ether you can't have good spark.
I pull the vac line from the FPR and shoot a good blast in there, it should run for 4-5 seconds on that.
Unless its completely flooded, in which case pull the plugs and the fuel pump relay, crank it over a few seconds.
Also smell the oil.
I've read of guys cranking their engine at nite with no lights around and seeing all the sparks escaping their worn out ignition systems HT wiring. If its a damp enviroment, spraying the plug wires with WD40 gets many balky engines going.
I find my cheapo timing light is good to checking for spark, but not quality of spark.

I worked on mine alone too, thats why I suggest putting the ether in the vac line going to the intake manifold, it works quite well.
If its got compression,
if the plugs aren't drowning in fuel (you didn't say one way or t'other..)
and you can't get it to pop with ether,
logically I'd sayits ignition related.
