Default '86 240 busted AC Compressor Clutch - I need knowledge!

Can anyone point me to a resource for info on replacing the bearing for the AC pulley? I don't need the AC, but I do need the power steering, the belt for which unfortunately comes off of the AC pulley (I think). After a period of loud chirping the pulley for what I'm assuming is the AC compressor froze, broke it's belt, and so went my power steering, as well. I want to do the minimal work to get my power steering back. I'd love any knowledge you guys have, since I have very little.

The easiest way to bypass the AC is to replace the center belt with a larger one, and run it around the fan, crank, and PS pump. See attached.

Awesome. That's my kind of automotive work. I'll start looking for a belt to fit immediately. Thanks a ton.

A Dayco 15485 belt will fit that application. I think Rock Auto has them.

Default Oops!

MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THAT PESKY LITTLE RUBBER TIMING BELT INSPECTION CAP! I found out the hard way that this new belt can rub it down and pop it into the timing belt assembly. The damn thing threw off my timing belt and killed the car on the highway. Thank goodness State Farm has a free tow policy, but I still had to cough up $350 for a mechanic to figure it all out for me. Next item on my to-do list: Learn how to diagnose, repair, and adjust the timing belt on a Volvo 240. Anyone know of a good resource?

There's a start. Good old red-block Volvo is pretty simple and easy to learn. Not sure with the 240 if you can fit an pneumatic bolt-knocker (not sure what the correct word is, but the one used for wheel-change) to the crank-pulley. I was able to do so on my 740, pretty tight, but possible And if you use the bolt-knocker for assembly, do knock for some time. The manual says it should be tightened 60nm + 60 deg, and belive me, you do not want to have it drop off...

Damn, Otis, sorry I didn't mention that rubber plug for the timing belt cover. Yes, as you discovered, it will rub.
