Default 87-740-wagon back brakes gone bad.

Howdy,

My name is John and I want to know if I can replace the back brake pads on my 1987-740-turbo wagon without splitting the calipers. If I have to, then so be it. But if there is a way to do this without having to bleed the system, the I am all for it! The pads had just started to grind and there are very, very light scars on one side of the disc. I know that I will be sacrificing a set of pads, but will it be okay to let the disc go without turning it down a size? From my estimates, there are only one, possibly two more trims until the shop will not take anymore off. Besides that, this is our one and only daily driver for the time being and we can't afford to miss any days off from work. I can't take the time needed to wait for the local shop to get to it and I can't get it to the not local shop that can do it when I bring it in. Crazy, I know, but when you're between a rock and a chunk of granite, what else can you do, right?

Hoping to hear from some of you shade tree mechs real soon! You other guys too! I need all the advice I can get!

John.

Yes you can replace the pads without splitting the calipers. Look at the caliper on the back of the axle. You will see 2 pins and a spring.Push the pins in and slide out the back of the caliper and the pads will slide out. It will take you more time to jack up and remove the tire than it will take to replace the pads.

It will be easy to replace. You will be fine installing them without turning the rotors.

John,

It should be possible to easily replace the rear pads without even cracking the hydraulics if you don't want to. But you DO want to replace the brake fluid if it's more than two years old.

The Brickboard FAQs pages have loads of info on this job. Give them a read before you begin.

and

As long as you are not experiencing any vibration under braking, you can probably get away without skimming the rotors IMO. Just bear in mind that they will have reduced effectiveness until the new pads conform to the grooves in the rotors.

Have Fun,
