I just got a great deal on an 88' 240 DL sedan, only $800. From what I can tell the engine and transmission are perfect. However there are a few minor faults.


1. The wipers don't work. The washer fluid does but the wipers don't work on any setting. I assume since the horn works, it's not the fuse but perhaps I should change it anyway. Where can I get the cylinder fuses? Is it more likely the motor, wiring or something else?

2. The car needs new tires, right now it has 205/60R15s on all 4 wheels. The passenger door calls for 185/70R14s. Which should I get when I replace the tires?

3. At times there is a moderately strong gas/exhaust smell in the car. The tailpipe is missing (from the aft muffler) so would that be why?

4. The AC doesn't work (I wasn't surprised). Is it worth it to retrofit to R134 or possible to find R12 freon?

Hi and welcome to the site.

1. My guess would be that the motor is out. Do you hear anything when turned on? It could also be the switch. You should get a ohm meter and see if power is getting to the motor.

2. Get the tires that are suppose to go on the car unless you change the wheel size. Keep odo and things correct.

3. Gas smells are usually due to vacuum leaks.

4. That's a tough one. You'll have to wait on the other's that have dealt with that.

I've also noticed that my engine temp gauge never reaches the halfway mark, it usually goes to about 1/3. Only once did it go higher to about 2/3rds.

Is this a sensor problem or should I replace the thermostat?
