88 240 Wagon custom stereo install.. Thoughts? Suggestions?
I currently have an 88 240 wagon. It is my 3rd 240 and I do most work on my cars myself, so I'd like to say I'm fairly familiar with 240s. I installed a new stereo deck with an ipod input, bypassed the stock amp and put in two new door speakers, (rockford fosgate 4" punch), but I am looking for a little bit more sound.
I know on some wagons they have 4" rear speakers on either side of the back seat. This one doesn't have any, there are just holes. I am looking for somewhere to put more speakers... I want to put in two 5 1/4's or two 6x9s. I am definitely up to fabricating mounts and modifying the interior, I just need ideas on where I could possibly fit them. I was thinking two 5.25s under the glove box/under the steering wheel, facing down? For how spacious the wagons are there isnt much space to hide speakers. I don't even want to think about trying to hide a sub or an amp. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have a 240 wagon too and did a little stereo upgrades as well. I replaced all four speakers, installed tweeters for all four, and I put a 500 watt 12" apline subwoofer in the back. That really gave it some more bass. I've always thought of putting 6X9's on the tail gate, where that carpet piece is, but i've been trying to save my money so I haven't done it yet. If you can create some sort of bracket to support those, I bet that would sound great back there in addition with your idea about underneath the dash.

I know this is a really old thread but I just finished putting 6x9's in the rear doors of my 88 wagon and holy wow did that make a huge difference! Also I've been in the process of putting dynomat all through my wagon. It's been a fairly tedious process but the results have so far been phenomenal.
my daughter's 240 sedan, I installed some nice JL Audio oversized 6.5" rounds on the parcel shelf, with separate crossovers, that are wired to a recent kenwood 50Wx4 deck, which can drive them quite loud.
you can surface mount a fairly good size speaker on the bottom of the 240 front doors, in place of the front part of the 'map pocket'... I haven't done that yet, I put some good quality 4" in the front door stock positions (behind the factory grills with just a bit of modding), but there's no way a 4" can compete with a 6.5"
I think if I had a 240 wagon, where large door speakers are not very practical, I'd go for smaller high quality door speakers, installed with bass blocking capacitors sized appropriately, and put a nice compact subwoofer in the rear, on a plug so you can take it out when you need the space. These in particular put out really clean bass way out of proportion to their size.

I'd use that in conjunction with a deck that has a seperate sub output, and a compact external amplifier of about 100 watts or so. size the bass blocker caps to block below about 100Hz on the mains.

Pierce, I totally get what you're saying as not being very poetical , I did have to do a little modification to the plastic door trim on the bottom of the door frame to accommodate the speakers. To me I really like my car, but it's a fairly inexpensive vehicle these days so I have no qualms with ruining some interior pieces to exponentially upgrade the sound quality of the stereo and drastically reduce the amount of road noise during quite driving with friends. It's been easy, fun and I love the results.
