Default '88 240 Wagon, tired of stalling

My '88 240 Wagon will just quit going down the road or sitting at a stop light or trying to merge onto the interstate (you get the idea...any time it feels like). I have done a search for this problem and have found many ideas and solutions. One is a "crank sensor". Does the '88 have one? I've looked on the bell housing and either it isn't there, or I don't know what I'm looking for.

I have a spare fuel pump relay that I carry with me just in case, but it doesn't seem to change anything more than the old relay does. I do notice that it is hot from time to time.

When it stalls, it usually starts back up again. Sometimes I have to remove the hose from the PCV spark arrestor to intake tube and it will start. Dirty oil separator? Cleaning the spark arrestor either helps or doesn't. Have checked ground points in the engine bay and they are tight and clean. Cannot determine if it is a loss of electricity or loss of fuel.

I did change the dirty air filter and am about to change the fuel filter and in-tank screen. It's been a while for both of those.

At my wit's end, cause I would rather find out what is wrong on my own before giving in and taking it to a shop.

No crank sensor in 88, that came in 89. It may be that your spare fuel relay is no better than the one in use. Possibly your power stage is failing. It's mounted on the forward most area of the inner driver fender, near the headlamp. The Hall sensor in the distributor will also cause similar issues.

a distributor problem is likely. the problem is that a replacement made my cardone may well be worse, and its difficult to find one made by anyone else.
