Got the head back on. it ran real rough for a couple minutes then smoothed out. After driving it I found oil all over the top of the nearly new waterpump and freshly cleaned under pan. thought it was valve cover gasket, changed it with plenty of adhesive- probably regret that next time that cover has to come off. turned out to be the cam seal- changed it and I am leak free, or at least much more so. Had a wedding to attend in florida- Sorry for such a late followup, and many thanks for everyones help.
