89 240 DL Blown Head Gasket
I drove my car yesterday in the 105+ heat and it overheated.....apparently I also blew a head gasket. What are the chances that I have messed anything else up?
Not too high...The blocks on the 240"s are cast iron with steel sleeves...extremely hard to destroy. Let car cool down and then try to start, if car runs ok i.e. no black smoke no knocking sounds you should be good to go...you may even want to try a bottle of bars leak head gasket repair if you don't want to do a headgasket or cannot afford...it works great in a pinch but follow directions to a tee...will probably eventually have to do a headgasket but this will get you buy for a while...should also fix what caused you to overheat first and foremost...
If you overheated it to the point that it won't start again and sounds different than normal when you try to start it (faster, no compression, similar to when you have a busted timing belt) than you have warped the head and you've got major problems. If it will start and run but it is bubbling coolant in the overflow tank, then chances are good that you can just replace the head gasket. I haven't had much luck with head gasket sealers on my Hondas; they just gunked up the radiator without curing the problem. YMMV..
