Greetings Volvo folks!
I'm planning on doing some maintenance on my 740,and wanted to seek advice/ pointers from the well seasoned techs that frequent this forum.
There is a DIY garage that rents out a bay with tools for 25 $/hr near where I live. what I’m planning is 1)oil change 2) fuel filter change and 3)switching the rear end oil to Mobil 1.

Could all this realistic be done in an hour?

The oil change I can in my sleep, so no problem on that point.

However I have never tried the fuel filter or the differential .

For the fuel filter I already have a bosch filter a set of new seals and new rubber mounts. That is everything I would need ? I know that one has to be careful not to bend to full feed line between the filter and the pump. what is the best way to achieve this?

For the differential, there is nothing wrong in that department ,but I didn't see anything in my records(12 yrs) of it being changed. So I figured while its in the air why not upgrade to synthetic. Do I need anything other than the oil for this job? is doing this even a good idea?

You COULD do it in an hour--if all goes well. But, in many cases some off the wall "glitch" creates unanticipated problems.

Do you really need a lift for that? If you have ever changed the oil without one, then the rest requires similar clearance.

I like to use ramps. I personally don't change fuel filters routinely, only if there is some symptom like reduced performance under heavy load, but that's me. The rear end? If there is no leaks, I'd check the oil condition, stick your finger in there, check the level, the color, etc. Be careful with the rear end plug--it's very soft and strips easily!

 

For your differential, it calls for a heavy oil - not like mobil 1. It is a special gear oil that is 80-90 weight. Check a service manual for proper specs.

lev > I usually use ramps to change my oil, however I’ve recently moved and would have to purchase new ramps and a container to receive the used oil, then have to dispose of the oil, and would need a place to store the ramps and oil container until next use. considering the cost of buying the new items and the headache of oil disposal and storage of said items after the fact... the 25$ an hour for a lift WITH TOOLS, the value seems well worth it. However, with that being said having the lift for an hour for just an oil change seems little wasteful. which is why I’m looking to do anything worth doing while I have the hour.

I know that the differential uses a different type of oil than motor oil, but doesn't Mobil 1 also make that type of oil? And is that oil compatible for a 89 740 turbo automatic. I had seen a video of someone servicing their Volvo rear end on you tube and it looked pretty strait forward. >basically remove drain plug, clean magnet on plug, add new washer replace drain plug and refill.

If ,and IF it is that easy ,I think I would be possible to do the oil change, fuel filter change and the rear end .

 

I'd probably use Castrol Syntrax, or the basic Castrol Gear Oil (formerly branded Hypoid).
