While I was working on my cluster I came across this plug behind it, it was unplugged so I cant figure out if its for the original radio or what.

The plugs are numbered 1-4, I'm thinking they're either the original speaker wires or for an option my car didnt get, doesn't match up with my turbo guage plug.

It is not a radio plug.

I wouldn't worry about it. There are many empty electrical plugs on these cars, both under dash and under hood that are not used. There are there in many cases for equipment that was not available in certain markets.

 

Heres a better shot of the wiring, if these hook up to certain things I might use them to install some front courtesy lights.

 

I need a list of pin number and wire colors to try and guess what it might be... that photo is way to out of focus and the wire colors are too overexposed to tell reliably.

 

Wire colors are:

Yellow (Either 4 or 2)
Green (Marked no.1)
Red-Yellow (Marked 3)
Blue-white (I'm not sure)

looks light headlight relay plug.

Relay clips to firewall by your left foot.

 

my 1990 diagram says the headlight relay has blue-white, green-red, white, yellow, and black wires.

 

That might be it then, I assume the spare plug is for Euro-spec headlights (along with the mini wipers, side markers, etc).

Even with that loose plug my headlights work perfectly fine.

 

yeah, see, without the headlight relay, you'd have no headlights

so thats something else.

if its a factory harness, red is circuit 30 (always-on power). red-something-else or somethign-else-red is usually power, but either fused or key-on juice (15)

 

Unless somebody did some dodgy wiring...which is unlikely but possible.

Looked at my headlight relay and its a 5 wire. That looks like a 4 pin so it aint that.

IDK maybe foglight relay plug....

Time to break out your multimeter and wiring diagram!

 

Its actually a 5 pin, 4 pins at the edges and one in the center, it'd be nice if it was for a front foglight.

I'm pretty certain this is factory, this car did have some "custom" wiring before my ownership but it was so awful I had to undo it.

 

I have a 1990 240 and I don't have any extra plugs behind my cluster that I have ever seen.

I am curious if you have your headlight relay mounted to the firewall behind the brake pedal. Dig down there and see if you find your headlight relay plugged in and mounted. If you found sketchy wiring already there could be a chance your headlights are "rigged" too.

Better pics of the wire colors! If you tell me exactly what colors you have on all FIVE pins I will go see if the match my headlight relay. MY headlight relay has at least a heavier guage YELLOW wire going to it like yours does. I forgot the rest... ha.

And I also suggested getting your multimeter out and tracing the circuit. Go buy one for $5 and learn to use it, or I guarantee you wont be enjoying courtesy lights any time soon.

 

The sketchy wiring was for aftermarket rear speakers, they hooked one wire up to the factory speaker and taped the other connector, splicing one crude extension into the custom speaker and "connecting" that wire by rapping it around where a port normally goes. I am no audio tech, but I could tell that whoever attempted this had no clue how speakers work.

I'll get to the multimeter sometime this week. If anyone messed with the headlights it would've had to been a mechanic.

 

I don't know how 240 fogs are wired, but I will tell you it has nothing to do with euro HEADLIGHTS. They use same wires up front.


Well, I just looked at my headlight relay for you:

1. Yellow
2. Dual Blue/White to same pin
3. Green/Red
4. Black
5. White in the middle


Even though the wires aren't exactly the same, they vary from years such as my 1990 to your 1992. So far yours looks to be the same thing......

 

I wouldn't doubt thats what it is then, thanks for the info.

 

After some research and pics I dug around the brake pedal and low and there was no relay, some wires in the corner but nothing for that plug. There were signs of previous work done in the trim, like one of the carpet tabs missing (which I replaced).

I seem to recall some headlight troubles being mentioned in my records of the car, so yes the lights have been modded in some way and the plug left to sit, thankfully whoever did the lights wasn't the same guy that tried to install custom speakers.

No front courtesy lights for me.

Shoddy wiring can cause fires! You honestly should find out where they rigged it. I am going to guess they jumped the relay under the hood with a wire connected to the headlight switch.


Above warning given to you by a person driving with a liquid fuel leak dripping at fuel filter! I should install that new fuel line.....

 

My relay failed from a windshield leak dripping water onto the relay. You should probably check your carpets after it rains for signs of water encroachment. I even got a few bad used ones before I found a good one. For a little while I had to turn on the headlights by using a jumper wire at THAT EXACT PLUG! That's why I know what it looks like.

 

I've checked for leaks, even taking the car through a car wash, this thing could double as a submarine.

I'll have to inspect the wiring closer when I can, no burning. They may have bypassed the relay somehow.

Whatever they did I just hope its not too hard to undo.
