91 240 - Strange clicking- Valves?
I have a 91 240 with 180k and it runs great but there is a clicking sound that is bothering me. I can hear the valves clicking away (but not too loud )and I want to have them adjusted just in case but there is also a strange clicking/clacking from inside the engine only when I accelerate. It is not a consistent clicking like the clicking of the valves. The clicking is very irregular as it comes and goes while I'm pressing the pedal. Again, it only happens when I accelerate but not on mild acceleration (probably around 2000rpm). I appreciate any help or direction. Thanks.

RE: 91 240 - Strange clicking- Valves?
well, I just got back from a long drive and it seems that I was wrong about the sound happening at around 2000rpm. The rpm and the engine speed don't affect anything since the rattling sound only happens when I accelerate and it is not very loud. As a matter of fact most people can't hear it until I point it out. I was driving on the highway and the rpms were at around 3000+ and there was no rattling, only on acceleration. The weird thing is that it happens when I press the pedal pretty far down when I want to get on the highway or pass somebody or even getting off the light.
Any other ideas what this could be?

I had a strange clicking on my 740. Couldn't isolate it. Then I noticed the waterpump was leaking. When I replaced the waterpump, the clicking went away!

Ah. I like how you think. That sounds like something very possible in my case. I always fill up with 89. I have noticed that it doesn't always do it, but it does most of the time, specially when it's hot out. And sometimes sounds louder than others, so what you are telling me is definitely possible.
I was waiting for my tank to drop to about 1/2 and put in some acetone. I was thinking about adding about 3 oz on the 1/2 tank. I have read that not only does the acetone clean better than fuel injector cleaner but that it also raises octane. I was thinking about adding some xylene/xylol also. Thanks!

mtsumedi, you are a genius!
I decided to fill up with 91 octane last night (can't find 93 around here) but I still had about a quarter tank left with 87 in it. Well, I go to work this morning crossing my fingers 'cause I could always hear the clicking the loudest as I get on the highway on my way to work and guess what... no clicking at all. I even had the pedal pressed all the way and nothing. I tried all the way to work accelerating hard whenever I could and nothing. On my way back home for lunch (right now) I tried again and I heard it only once at the last hard acceleration try but I could barely hear it this time and I'm guessing my true octane rating is a little below 91 since I had some 87 left in the tank when I filled up. Anyways, just wanted to follow up and let you know the problem is fixed.... now on to my low oil pressure problem....

You may need to retard the timing in order to run 87 octane and not have the detonation. It's up to you though because it will be a slight loss of power.
