Hello-


I just bought myself a '91 240 wagon 198,000k auto

all's well except ..... doesn't always shift from 3rd into 4th.
seems to be no rhyme or reason to the shifting chaos.

My questions to this body of experts is:

where do I begin my quest for the source?

is this a common problem for 240's?

did I pay too much at $800?

 

Price is OK if the car is serviceable and in half way decent shape.
Does your overdrive work? 3rd to 4th, this is the O/D. The button lights up, etc.? If it works intermittently then most likely it's related to the O/D's electric problems such as solenoid, wiring, etc. Wiring would be a start. Also, I'd also change the trans fluid as a start.
