92 240 intermediate starting problem
Hi everyone,
I am having an intermediate starting issue with my 1992 240. First off, it is a base model with automatic trans. I go to start it, all the dash lights come on, but the engine doesn’t rotate. Tried to wiggle the shifter in park/neutral and nothing. Wiggled the key and the steering wheel as well, took the key in and out several times, nothing. Left to run errands for 40mins to an hour, tried it again and starts right up. So far the problem has happened twice within four days. Same thing the second time, won’t turn over, leave it for awhile and then starts right up again. Now the battery is new, starter seems to be fine, but have to run some tests to confirm. If it’s not the starter, I was thinking the pie selector in the gear box or the ignition. Those will be next on my list to test. Question is, is there anything else I should be looking at that might cause this problem. Thanks for any input anyone might have.

It's easy to check the neutral starting switch adjustment. It's mounted next to the shifter. Take the 2 screws out at the rear of the shifter cover and you can see it. There's a white plastic arrow/pointer that follows the shifter. A Phillips head screwdriver is all you need to check and adjust the switch
Thxs for the reply... I had to take out the pie selector next to the shifter in the past, (I had to take it apart and repair/clean it because the contacts were gummy and corroded.) I plan on checking that again to see if that’s the problem, along with the ignition switch and testing the starter and starter solenoid, but I was just curious if there was something other than those 3 things that would also cause my problem that I should look into. Thanks
you could check the starter end connection for the big red wire that comes from the positive terminal on the battery to make sure it is tight.
better still is to remove it entirely, clean, and re-connect.
