92 Volvo 240 Emergency Brake
First off, I gave the search bar a try before starting a new thread. I am new to this forum so if I did not search correctly and this has already been addressed, please let me know.
On to my question. The emergency brake on my 240 is stuck in the up position and appears to be off the metal gear track. Do any of y'all have suggestions on how to fix this? I have tried to get to the nut behind the lever itself and was unsuccessful due to its position. Oddly enough the brake still works if I depress the black button that is visible in the second picture. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

the black button just lights the BRAKE warning in the dashboard.
our 240 did that a couple times when the parking brake shoes were badly worn, I was able to pull the handle even higher up then push the button to get the pawl to clear the ratchet teeth so it would go back down.

Dead thread, but I ran into a similar issue while rebuilding my differential. For some background information, I had ample slack from the brake cables and had accidentally pulled the lever above and off of the metal track. I found this while googling possible fixes, so I figured I'd contribute what worked in case others did the same. My solution was:
- Loosen parking brake cables via the 10mm nuts inside the console.
- Unscrew the button on the parking brake lever & remove the spring.
- Depress the threaded rod to release the ratchet key.
- Either use centripetal force to throw the rod forwards so you can grab it (by gently flinging the lever down) or reach in with forceps to pull the rod forwards.
- Reinstall the spring and the button.
I think there are a couple misconceptions. Consult any year of the Volvo green manual for the parking brake adjustment. It may be necessary to remove the cover to access the adjustment behind the handle.
