Default 93 Volvo 240 dies and restarts

Howdy ya'll.

I have a 93 240 and it likes to die. I'll be driving along, fast or slow, and the engine just dies. I pull over, wait a 30 seconds to a minute and it restarts.

It seems that the amount of time I have to wait is increasing. It also will sometimes go long periods without dying, then it will do it several times in a row.

This makes me nervous to drive it, I'm being conditioned to worry while I drive and I hate it! How can I track down the source of this problem?

I am no expert, but I know awhile ago I had a sort of similar problem where the engine of my 740 would die if turned on the high beams. In my case it was an issue with some ground connections in the engine bay that had corroded. The bad connection was messing with something. Cleaning them fixed the problem.

most likely: crank position sensor--change it. if continues, next: fuel injection relay.

I agree with lev on this. The CPS and fuel pump relay are the first items I check. When it dies and won't start, do you hear the fuel pump run when the turn the key from off to the II position? If not, then the problem is most fuel pump relay. To check the CPS, take a look at the wire connected. If the insulation is flaking off then it needs replacement.

My '89 240 would do that until one day it wouldn't start. The diagnostic code was for crank position sensor. When I inspected the sensor, the wire harness was oil soaked and falling apart.
