'94 940 suspension replacement ? ? ?
Hey guys, I'm looking to help my son replace all the suspension on his 94 940 non-turbo sedan, his first car. Not sure all I need though. I have a cart full of items on Rockauto.com, but want to make sure I don't forget anything. Right now we're focusing on all the rubber since it's almost 20 years old.
So far I have:
Lower ball joint - 2
Front Lower Outer; Strut Rod to Control Arm bushing - 2
Front Lower Inner Rear Control Arm bushing - 2
Front Stabilizer Bar Link Bushing (Includes: Pin, Bushings and Hardware) - kit (includes 2)
Front Front Outer tie rod end - 2
Transmission filter - 1
Transmission Mount - 1
Engine Mounts - 2
Thanks
Dom

I would get real volvo rubber from TascaParts.com or Volvo Parts - Authentic OEM Volvo Parts direct from Volvo Parts Webstore | VolvoPartsWebstore.com rather than aftermarket. I'm not sure what all rock auto sells but a lot of what I find on there is asian import stuff.
some of those bushings are a real bear to replace, I hope you have a big press and can use it.
the one bushing that will really tighten things up is that double cone that connects the radius control rod to the main swing arm. the rest are probably fine.
if you're doing all that stuff, you shoudl be doing struts and strut tower plates and such, too, also inspect the steering tie rod inner and outer joints.
the filter on an AW70/71/72 transmission is just a metal screen, easily washed off.

More importantly, make sure you in fact DO NEED all those items! Many of the problems old Volvo owners face are due to replacing too much of what doesn't need to be messed with, and these days using cheap aftermarket parts... If it ain't broke, don't mess with it!
pierce, you mentioned
What are the part numbers for this radius arm bushing. We crawled under the car today and I couldn't see a special double cone shaped bushing. I know what you guys are talking about I've seen the bushing online, but can't seem to visualize where it goes.
The radius arm is the rod with the blue bushing at the end correct? Is that blue bushing the double cone shaped one? What's the part number for the bushing at the other end?
From what saw today he definitely needs ball joints, tie rod ends, and sway bar end links. When the car was on jack stands the wheels moved a bit when I shook them. I figure if we have to place those things already mind as well replace everything, which is just 3 more bushings per side, correct?

Thanks
Dom

its the parts #11 here,

which is from here... Front axle spring support. Fits: Volvo | VolvoPartsWebstore.com
now I'm confused both my VADIS catalog and that drawing above give two different PN's for this bushing depending on another part I can't quite figure out.
there /are/ two different types of control arms, steel and alloy, but I thought that only affected which swaybar ends you used.

dfera, is that photo of your car?
If so, the outer tie rod end and balljoint look NEW! And the cone bushing visible in the photo looks blue (and new), which would mean it's poly which can be much more durable.
If these parts are new, think twice about your perceived need for replacing them now.

hahah, no, thats MY car, with a major overhaul to the suspension mostly done, using a mix of OEM Volvo and Superpro poly parts. California car, note the near total lack of corrosion.
I overdid it, half the parts I replaced really didn't need it. for sure, the steering inner tie rod tips were shot, as were the 'cone' bushings that hold the two lower suspension arms together, and my shocks were totally dead. I'm sort of regretting putting IPD swaybars and bilsteins on what is my daily driver, the ride is a bit harsh on the rough roads around here, but man it handles well in the mountains

Hey guys,
Pulling this thread back from the dead. So the boy...aka 17yr old man-child has enough saved to finally do all this work. Is IPD really the only place to get sport springs and shocks? I assume the only strut/shock option for sport springs is the Bilstien HD's, correct?
Thanks
Dom

IPD probably has the best sport springs here in the US, there's some european companies, names escape me at the moment.
FCPeuro stocks some of this stuff, but those blue springs IPD sells are their own product
