Default Is my 240 done ?

Good afternoon. I had some time today and thought I would rotate the tires. hen I removed the right rear ,I happened to notice that the upper spring seat has an 1-1/2 rust hole on the outer side. "I felt sick" The other side looks ok but now I'm wondering if my poor old 240 is done. I have a Haynes manual but there is not a single thing mentioned about it. The car still looks and runs good even with 340k miles. Sad !

This always depends upon what you can do yourself and how bad the rust is. If the rust is structural, then you need to weld. If it is not you can clean and paint it. If it is a through hole in the floor or door you can use fiberglass. Can you get a picture and a better description of the problem?

Is this the spring seat in the front or the rear. You can replace these. New ones from Volvo aren't budget busters although if the spring seat has a hole, there may be holes other places as well. Here is a link to the fronts:

And a link to the rears:

Anything can be repaired, and welding is actually not that expensive. How much rust is there in other places? How much do you want to keep this car alive? All, a matter of money!

Thanks for the response. As said in my original post, it is the R rear upper seat. I have been able to see that there is a bolt head in the center of the seat. I wonder if there is any chance of ever getting that out. Frame still seems to be very solid where the seat bolts to. And thanks for the link.

Rear suspension. Fits: Volvo | VolvoPartsWebstore.com

it looks like most all the bits and pieces there are available new.

unluckily, I can't find on the 240 parts diagrams where it shows the upper attachment. this is fairly different than the 740/940 rear end.

Thanks Pierce for the help. I have found there seems to be no access to the other side of the bolt no.4 on the diagram. It looks like it is threaded directly into the frame. I have figured out that the seat has a thick sealer between the seat and frame and the frame seems to be in good shape where it is bolted. I can't believe they would have threaded the frame.

Thanks Pierce for the response. I checked and found no access to the other end of the bolt no.4 on the diagram. The frame seems very solid and there is a thick sealer or gasket between the seat and the frame. Is it possible they would threaded the frame? we shall see.

probably a welded nut. I know the top spring retaining bolt on the 740/940 goes into a nut that is welded above the subframe there, ditto the nuts for the tow hitch frames on both 240 and 740/940

I just came in from looking at it again. I believe your right. I hoping that with the heavy sealer that the bolt may be in good shape and come out fairly easy. I'll try a good 6 point socket on my impact as soon as the new part comes in. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks Ernie

Oh yea. The no.4 bolt on the diagram doesn't show a nut that goes with it.

probably a very good idea to spray the whole thing down with new underbody sealer when you've replaced it

Yes ,will do. We bought this "93" as a first car for our son. Funny thing is his ski coach has a 92 that is identical to his. That's makes it "very cool" in his eyes and all the rest of the ski team. I'll update when I get it finished. Ernie
