940 2.3 possible relay / pump issue
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and I apologise if the question I'm about to ask has been covered elsewhere but I'm not really sure where to start, so if anyone can post a link to another thread, then I'd be grateful;
This is a question on behalf of my father-in-law who does not speak English, so please bear with me-
He owns a 940 2.3 ('97 model) which on occasion will not start, but will turn over after a period of around 30 minutes. It normally cuts out while driving, which can be mildly terrifying on some Argentine roads...
He thinks it could be a relay/fuel pump connected issue- I think so too, as I had a Polo which did the same thing, but we wanted to be completely sure by asking here.
Can anybody possibly shed any light on this or point me in the right direction of the appropriate thread?
Many thanks in advance,
Jamie

it could be almost anything. the only way to determine whats wrong is do a bunch of tests. guessing what MIGHT be wrong is counter-productive.

Could be the fuel pump and/or relay but I would more lean towards it being the crank position sensor. To check the pump and relay, you should hear the pump run for about 1 second when the car is off and you turn the key to the II position. Next time the car won't start, have him check this. I make a habit of listening for the fuel pump when I go to start the car.
The easiest way to check the crank position sensor is by inspection. It is located on the top of the bell housing where the engine and transmission are bolted together. It has a fat black coax cable running from the sensor to a connector on the firewall. Inspect this wire. If the insulation is cracked and/or flaking off then it probably should be replaced.
