As long as the 740 is 1991 or '92 model and the 940 was a "no fog light" model. The "fogs" in your post mean that the parts are coming from a 940 "fog", so, no, as the fenders are different as well on the 940 with fog lights.

I've heard that the 1990 740 is a bastard 'tweener' model, and that ONLY 1990 740 headlights fit it. the 91/92 740 is for all practical purposes identical to a 91/92 940 (but NOT the 1991 940SE which is really a 960 with a turbo-4)

Confusing? hah! I've also been told that if I wanted to convert my 92 740 to fogs, I'd need a new grill, and the grill for the fogs doesn't line up with the 740/940 hood, so I'd need a whole new hood, and its just not practical, as the 960 style alloy hood mates up with a different cowl at the windshield, has totally different hinges, etc etc.

yeeesh. Its the little things that'll **** ya off.

if/when I install fogs, they are likely going to be under-bumper aftermarket Hella fogs, probably the MicroDE projector lamps which I'll mount in the air dam.

Ive thought about mounting fogs under mine as well and I am leaning on putting the yellow fog lights in. I thought it would look great at a distance.

Photochop of my 745T wagon with Hella MicroDE foglights that I'm thinking of installing.

These take H3 bulbs, and you /can/ get yellow 55W H3 bulbs for them. I've got these MicroDE's on my motorcycle (in fact, I cribbed the pic from the bike, ahhah) and they have a really good proper fog pattern, with a clean cutoff, and are metal with a thick(!) glass lens so they take a lot of road abuse.

oh, I discovered that my car, a 1992 740 (same as a base model 940 in almost every way) HAS the factory wiring for the foglights, its brought back to the existing foglight switch for the rear fog warning light, and all you need to do is replace the switch with the 3-way one from a 940/960 that came with fogs, install the foglight relay in the main panel behind the ashtray, and poof, you're good to go. I do believe I saw that the 91+ cars have different switches than the <= 1990 cars.

I have a 90 740 as well. It is indeed a one off year. Differences from a 91+ are the hood, grill and the "L" strip width that fills between the headlamp/grill and headlamp/bumper wrap. The headlamps are the same as later non-fog 7's. Later model fog headlamps can be retro fitted w/ a little finesse but I never bothered because I am not fond of the look nor are they particularly effective IMHO. My 740 was purchased with a damaged hood and wiper cowl. When I repaint it next year, I'm swapping to a 91+ hood, grill and trim. I have all the stuff...just haven't done it yet.

thats funny how one year difference on a car that basically seems to be the same can have such major differences. But its definitely a good thing to know when you go to get parts.

Yes, the 91-92 headlamps and parking lights are the same as the 90. The 91+ grill is a little shorter and the headlight L trim is fatter to fill in the gap between grill and headlight. All this is done so the lines in the hood will line up w/ the grill.

My 90 740 will take 940 side lights, I assume the panels are 940 panels. As far as I was aware, the only difference between the facelift 740 and 940 sheetmetal was the bonnet back at the windscreen cowl.
