Default 940 turbo running again, sort of.

I recently inherited a non running 1994 940 turbo wagon. It seemed like a timing problem and during the past few weeks I've gone through everything to do with the timing belt and found several problems. The key on the lower timing gear had sheared allowing the harmonic balancer to turn about 5 degrees, the mounting plate that holds the belt tensioner pulley was bent causing the timing belt to run part way off the timing gears and the index pin holding the cam gear was also sheared.

The only problem I was able to identify was that a small piece of the back timing belt cover (the cover was falling apart) had gotten between the tensioner pulley bracket and the head when some previous mechanic worked on the engine and had tightened the locknut back down and bent the bracket. I assume the misaligned pully cased the belt to track wrong.

Anyway, I've replaced the sheared index pin, the tensioner pulley and the lower timing belt gear. (New belt too, of course). This morning I took the big leap and tried to start her up.....................

Yes! It started immediately and ran perfectly! Couldn't believe it, but then I was very methodical figuring everything out and getting it back together as it should be. Great, now just drop her in gear and go for a little ride...................

Got about 50 yards, accelerating nicely when it kind of burps and promptly dies.

I thought maybe the timing belt had broken or something else weird but it hadn't. I went ahead and tried restarting and it did, but was running very rough although well enough to get me back in the driveway. Did a quick check on the belt position and indexing and that seems to be ok. I put the timing light on it though and the crank looks like it is 180 degrees out! (The timing mark is 180 opposite from the marks on the timing belt cover when the light flashes).

I will continue to investigate but I wonder if anyone here might have an idea of what might have happened?

TIA, Dennis in Maine.

OK, found the problem. Air intake hose was not reattached. Must have been just sealed when I first started the engine and fell off as I drove away. Sure did cause some weird behavior!

All is well and I have a sweet running 940turbo.
