940 wagon fuel sending unit
HISTORY: The car died while my wife was driving. Turned out to be a fuel pump (single in tank model). Replaced by a recommended garage that didn't know Volvo's. After 1st visit, pump was loud, ran fine, fuel gage didn't work. I sent it back to have the gage fixed. "needs a new sending unit, blah, blah, blah". Returned with gas gage going from half tank to empty with warning light. So I tore into it myself today. I found the wires spliced out side the tank (to lazy to find the disconnect) with a loose wire. The hose placement didn't seem right so I pulled the unit. It was installed sideways (90 degrees). So here I am trying to get it back in correctly.
QUESTIONS: Does the clip that holds the fuel pump to the "float" unit need to remain attached to the bottom of the "float" unit after it is placed in the tank? It pops apart upon installation but feels like it is in the well. And how close to the bottom of the well is the filter screen? It does not have the Volvo hose from pump to "bung" and it stay on the clip. Sorry no digital camera to assist with this.
I'd appreciate any help.
