Default New Member, big problem

Hey everyone, i just bought a 1990 740 Wagon 3 days ago...it's a 2.3L non turbo automatic. I went to run to the store today, and when i took off from the light (I haven't beaten on the car at all) it felt almost like something wasn't catching right. Like how it would feel if the rear end gears were missing teeth, and slipped, grabbed, slipped, grabbed. It did that for only a second, then stopped. At the next light it did it again, a little more, so i started to turn around to make my way back home. But before i could make it home it got to the point that the car wouldn't even move...you put the car in drive, reverse, whatever and it just revs, car doesn't move a bit.

Anybody have any ideas on what the problem might be? i'm assuming i just need a new trans, but if anyone knows of something to try before i do that, let me know.

FYI, the problem is definitely in or before the trans, when it's in drive, the driveshaft does NOT spin. I'm thinking maybe broken input shaft or something...but hell...with all of what 120HP, is that even possible?

Thanks in advance...

*edit* - Tranny fluid shows full...
