Default abs light on and brake lights do not work

Hey, so I just got this 1991 volvo 240 a couple of weeks ago and the abs light comes on and stays on everytime the car is turned on. it never goes out. i just noticed that none of the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is depressed and the car is on. the brakes themselves work perfectly fine and the brake fluid is also fine. ive tried replacing the bulbs in the brake lights but nothing happened and they still do not work. i tried replacing the fuse labeled "brake lights, abs" in the fuse box inside the car (by the driver side door). nothing happened. what gives?

This might be a really easy fix. I bet your brake light switch is gone.

Regards, Andrew.

Hey thanks, Andrew, I'll have to give this a shot! Hopefully this will save me some money instead of going to a dealership.

okay so I replaced the brake light switch. no difference. i found that the 10A ABS fuse (under the passenger side) was bad. replaced that and my abs light finally went out. brake lights still do not work.

anyone know anything else to check? this is ridiculous.

Try the Bulb Integrity Sensor. If that goes bad you will not have brake lights. Hope this helps.

is that what its called? i called the local dealership and he told me it sounded like the red relay under the dash must be faulty. abs light on and brake lights do not work-snapshot_20100125.jpg
this is what it looks like and theres a crack in it so im assuming its the problem.

what my new problem is is that I have no idea where to get a new one. i went to advanceauto and autozone but none of them seemed to know what exactly it was if they even sold it. i kept saying it was the brake light relay or bulb sensor relay but i really have no clue what it is or where to get a new one. any ideas?

Although I can't help you solve the problem, my ABS light is constantly on as well with intermittent 'light out' warnings that are incorrect. If you need specialty parts though I would not suggest going to a local auto parts dealer and either find a local Volvo shop, which will most likely be very pricey or go here (suggested):

I've also received parts for my Sveedish baby at:

Good luck!
