Default alternator problem? 1987 245dl troubleshoot?

It started out a few different lights came on the dash while driving and everything was going wacko. car wouldnt hold a charge so automatiically i assume its the alternator, hooked up a brand new one and not only the battery light comes on when the key is turned in the off position, when we jump it it runs normal until you take the jumper cables off then it runs for a few and then stalls out. any ideas? battery tests good

um, can you clarify "... and not only the battery light comes on when the key is turned in the off position" ??

with the key off, no lights should be on. when you turn the key on, before you start the car, most of the indicator lights should come on, especially the 'battery' light, then when you start the engine, they should go out

what does "battery tests good" mean, btw? a fully charged battery should be around 12.6V at room temperature and everything shut off. a cheap load test is to turn on the headlights with the ignition on but engine not running, and watch the voltage drop, it should drop maybe 0.1V, then tick down 0.01V at a time such that it takes at least a few minutes to drop another 0.1V. headlights back off, start the car, and the voltage at the battery should be 13.8-14.2V, this indicates the alternator is working well.
