Default best (cheap) speaker setup

Im in need of some new speakers for my 740 sedan. It has the 4-speaker setup; one in each door. Im looking at crutchfield.com because they only show speakers that fit your specific car. I guess the speaker size is 5-1/4" if this isn't true, or if I should buy smaller 4' let me know. Also, they have 3-way speakers and 2-way speakers for the same price (49.99 a pair) I read somewhere that you should put 3-ways in the front and 2-ways in the back (the 3-ways are Kenwood KFC-1361S and the 2-ways are Pioneer TS-G1341R) Is that a good idea, or should I get all same-way speakers that are the same brand? Any advice/experience from this would mean a lot, thanks.

What are looking to do with your sound system? That should be your starting point. The reason for getting the 3 or the 2 way speakers is for greater sound fidelity, and they will sound better, but how much can you discern over the rest of the road noise. For me personnally the 1 ways are sufficient, but you might be better able to hear the voices if you get a 3 or 2 way. If 3s are just as expensive as 2 ways, get the 3 ways allaround. As for the size of the speakers, i dont know. You can allways get smaller speakers and set up spacers that allow the speaker to be anchored in all four corners. I've never gotten into the speaker areas, but that might be soon.

My 240 only has the 5" 1/4 speakers in the front doors, so I bought some 2 way Kenwoods for the front, built a box for the rear, and put 2 6x9s in the box. To match the blue interior of the car, I bought some navy blue duck canvas and covered the box in it. Looks and sounds good, alot better over the small front speakers alone.

Ok well im not sure if all 740's have it, but there is a amp in your car which if it still works (and it should) helps the sound a lot so 4 small speakers will do well for now. I think the size is 5 1/4 all the way around for the doors and that would be the easy way. Go with one brand all the way around or you can mix it up but if you get 3 way speakers in the back do the same in the front. Just as an example, i replaced the rear door speakers in my 91' and it is so loud, and thoes too are the only ones that really work, the orginal dash speakers are junk and dont ever work i think so im getting all my sound out of the rear 2. I know the idea of smaller speakers may be dull but trust me they fill up the cabin really well in the volvos.
