Default bogging and hesitation in 240

my 240 wagon has been acting up, it is a intermitten problem as sometimes if the car sits for a few hours and you start it up it drives fine, then after a while of driving it starts bogging at low rpm hesitation on and off. the car sputters and doesnt want to go even with throttle griven.

there are no cel, i checked the rotor cap and button and it looks kinda worn a little burntish. i took off the maf and cleaned it with electrical cleaner also cleaned the harness to it, also checked vacuum lines

does anyone know what this could be?

What year? Even without the CEL light on, chances are there might still be codes present to at least help point you in the right direction.

how hard is it to replace the in tank fuel pump?

its a 1991 240 wagon

it really seems to be somewhat intermitten as when its cold or sits a while then starts the car runs fine untill it get warm of runs for a little bit, then it acts up and wants to go.

See the LH2.4 section for getting the codes:
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-90...neOBDCodes.htm

If you put a jumper wire on the left sides of fuses 4 and 6 both pumps will run constantly and you can listen for them, with the car not running. Remove the gas cap to hear the in-tank pump, it makes a high pitched sound.

Clean both of those fuses while there.

thats exactly what an intank fuel pump will do when it goes bad. When its cool it will work well, but once the motor warms up it will start to sputter, almost acting like you are running out of gas.

You remove a panel in the trunk and will be able to see the assembly mounted to the top of the tank. The "bung nut" tool from IPD makes removing the locking ring easy, otherwise you'll need a brass drift and hammer. For me the biggest challenge was getting the unit out without dropping the float into the tank, you have to take your time with it.

So no you don't need to drop the tank.

ok i got the intank fuel pump and had pep boys install it. the car runs 95% better but it still from time to time had a slight sputter. not always but sometimes on slight hills or what not.

pep boy said that all of the fuel parts looked to be OE intank fuel pump inline fuel pump and fuel filter.

my question is do you think the slight sputter is being caused by the OE fuel filter. the odom stopped at 297k so this car could have 300k or 600k i donno beucase i havent owned it long nor do i know exactly what the milage is.

but the factory fuel pumped looked really old and there was like powdery rusty looking **** that was in the fuel pump filter. but the new pump is on and the car runs tons better.

could it be the fuel filter?

Yes they are always on there really tight to prevent leaks and can be hard to get off even without the rust. Make sure to use new copper washers on the fittings. Soak them down with PB blaster and use 6 point sockets/wreches and another wrench for a counterhold. The line between the pump and the filter can be replaced ... if it has to be cut ... but be very careful with the line that goes from the filter to the engine - that line is hard to find/replace!

Also be ready to catch the gas.

ok i went to pep boys and they warned me about that line breaking esp becuase it was old and said it was a good chance it could break, but i told them it had to be replaced and do it anyway, it didnt break and the new filter is on. 80.00 later, along with the 130 for install and 40 for the pump.

well with the new filter on the car definitly seems to be more responsive although it hasnt fixed the problem, both the pump and filter together have the car running much better, but i am still getting that intermitten problem

ive now replaced hte fuekl filter and fuel pump.

when this problem occurs i get kinda a exhaust smell that i can smell in the cabin only when the problem is occuring though not sure what that is about.

this happens ONLY sometimes.

the next place i was going to look was like: fuel pressure regulator, spark plugs, spark plug wires, rotor cap, rotor button,

i am really drawing a blank on what this can be, it doesnt happen all the time only so often sometimes it doesnt happen at all sometimes all the time sometimes only when its hot and sometimes never when its cold so i donno, i am really struggling here as i have spent more money on this car and still cant drive it.

I'm wondering if maybe it has something to do with your catalytic converter. When the material inside becomes broken up, it can plug the exhaust. When you go over a bump do you hear anything metalic rattling around?
