So I've seen it posted that the brake light switch is up high in the dash and I'm wondering if ti would be more expedient to remove the instrument cluster to get at it since I can't seem the damn thing from underneath.

 

What year, sedan or wagon? Its at the top of the lever that the pedal is attached to. The switch closes with the pedal applied.
