Default Rear fog lights and stop lamp 1986 740 wagon

edit:

Ok so let me clarify this again as it might help narrow it down.

Both top bulbs on my tail lights aka: rear fog lights and my center stop lamp(the light in the bottom center of the back glass) are all not working. The light on my cluster only comes on wen i press the brake pedal...

Checked fuses they seem ok just weird how they all went out same time

all three brake lights have separate wires to the 'bulb out detector' in the main relay/fuse panel behind the ashtray.

however, they all go to the same ground, in the trunk, whihc I believe is under the left side floor panel, or maybe its under the covers for the 3rd row seat, look around just aft of the left rear wheel well.

If ALL brake lights are out, look at the relay for the "lights out", the big red double decker one... The brake light switch, distant second candidate.

If i turn my lights on and i go to the back of my wagon the bottom red lights are on and when the brake is pressed those same bottom lights get brighter. I dont recall but do the top red lights need to be on as well and get brighter when brake is pressed? The light in te back glass does not work either.
Its weird how all this happened the same day.... It didnt happen while i was driving but i turned it off when i got home an once it restarted these lights stopped working.
Would this really be a groud issue for just these lights?

Also keep in mind that the warning light in my cluster only turns on when the brake pedal is pressed

no, the brake lights on a 7/9 wagon or sedan are JUST the bottom segments, plus the high center light.

the top lights on a WAGON are the 'rear fog lamp', usually just the drivers side. on a sedan, its the inside lower light.

its volt meter time, along with a copy of the wiring diagram.

the left rear fog should only come on with the foglamp switch. its a completely separate circuit.

wait, what year is your 740 ? they changed the lights somewhere around 89 or 90.

I did this on mine and am very pleased with the improvement in brake light "performance." Those top lamps are always unlit and only light up when the brakes are on-- almost startling, and very much more noticeable to anyone behind.
