Brake liights, tail lights
Hello to everyone. Just joined the forum. My elderly friends just inherited a 93 240 as a second car. It has low mileage but needs some freshening up, so I'll be helping them fix things up. As time goes by, I'll tackle issues one by one and seek help from the forum when necessary.
First is the tail lights/ brake lights. I am told the previous owner (now deceased) had no brake lights and couldn't pass inspection. Her mechanic instead of replacing the brake light switch, made some other type of repair that allows the brake lights to work, but when you depress the pedal, the bulb failure warning light turns on. I haven't checked the wiring near the pedal yet, but has anyone heard of this and knows what could have been done?
Second related question is what bulbs are supposed to be what on the tail light assembly. Here is a link to a photo:

There are six "lenses". Outer top is turn, outer bottom is brake?, top middle is backup light, bottom middle looks like reflector. What are the top and bottom inner bulbs supposed to be? On this car the bottom inners are open holes(from trunk side) with no bulbs present.

They probably had a bad brake light integrity relay which is a big round red relay under the drivers side kick panel...a lot of people don't know that this controls ALL the brake lights from working and like dumb dumbs they cut into the wiring and mess it all up. Don't worry about the idiot light it can go off even if the bulbs are not the same brands but still working cause it measures voltage...yes a couple of the slots are blank and the inner red on drivers side is for rear fog light...
