Default buying advice

Hello, I'm an new to this forum. I tried to search for buying tips on older 740's. I'm considering a 740 wagon with 168000 miles. What should I look for? When should timing belts be changed, and what does that cost? I would be most grateful for any and all advice.
Thank You.

Default RE: buying advice

Those miles are not so bad IF the car had been loved. Timing belts are easy and even if broken, nothing bad happens to the motor. The tranny is more important: make sure the overdrive works, the fluid is clean and not burnt, and that it shifts Ok-basic common sense test drive. Motor should be quiet, smooth, start easily, all that is, well, like any other car. You don't mention year, but earlier 740's ('87 and before) had wiring problems which are a pain-make sure wiring is not rotten...
