Default A/C Compressor Burnt Out

My a/c doesn't work anymore and my compressor has just burnt out. It smells like it burnt out at least, and a small amount of smoke comes from it if I drive for over 30 minutes. Can I replace it with a compressor that doesn't work but isn't burnt out? I looked into the kit from IPD to bypass it, but it doesn't fit my engine. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything else I could do?

Yes, you can use a non-functioning unit as an idler pulley. I think I may need to do the same as mine is starting to make noise. I have considered disassembling it and re-lubricating the bearings as it might extend the life a little longer. My AC hasn't been functional in years.

thebuelister: if you disconnect the wire to the compressor/clutch (or unplug the pressurestat at the a/c reciever/dryer), does the pulley freewheel ? If the clutch is frozen, then you'll need to find another compressor with a good clutch, and swap them... if the new compressor is non-op just leave the Ac control wire disconnected and taped off.
