A/C issues with my 1985 240 DL
I went to the A/C mechanic yesterday to charge my Volvo's system. I don't have access to any R12 so that's why I went seeking to get the system charged. It doesn't appear to have any leaks. Upon troubleshooting the system, we discovered there is no pressure on the low side of the system and only about 150 psi on the high side. He feels the expansion valve may be the problem. My question with R134a the prevailing refrigerant, do I need to be very specific when seeking a replacement valve for my car? He also mentioned that he had seen A/C failure from folks who had attempted using a retrofit kit to convert to R134a because of excess pressure. My second question: what year did the 240 series convert to R134a and have you had any good experiences with conversions. I'm competant of my mechanical abilities to do so but I'd like to here from experience that there are no issues with using the factory compressor or other componants. I do believe some retrofit systems require a "high pressure" cutout switch and or a pusher electric fan to preclude excess discharge pressure. Thoughts or comments?
