Default Camshaft remove/reinstall in a '92 240

Hi,

I want to remove the camshaft and camfollowers in my 240 to replace the rubber cushions that go between the followers and valve stems. I have a Bentley manual and understand the instructions but I need to know something else.

Is it possible to replace the front camshaft oil seal without removing the inner timing belt cover?

If I have to remove the inner timing belt cover, can I get it off by just removing the belt tensioner or do I have to remove the crankshaft pulley, dampener, lower outer cover, crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets, etc. as well?

The reason I want to replace the cushions is because of annoying valve train tapping that remains even after a valve lash adjustment. I'd also like to inspect the followers as well. I don't think the rubber cushions (seals?) have ever been replaced. There's 166,000 miles on the car.

Thanks,

Mark

You will have to remove the balance shaft pulley inorder to get the back cover off. And the tensioner as well.

OK now here's the next question.

Is there a way to hold the crankshaft in place (keep it from turning) while loosening/tightening the bolts without buying the custom tool shown in the Berkley Bible?

Thanks,
Mark

Some people install a long breaker bar on the nut and roll the bar and let it rest on the ground and then bump the key and use the starter to break the bolt loose.

Other than that you will need to use an Impact gun.
