Default cant locate fuel filter

seem's funny but while I've been working on my brick, I was doing the regular maintence changing filters and stuff, and can not find the fuel filter, traced the lines from the pump to the tank and cant find one at all, has any body else had that problem any suggestions?

Its mounted to the firewall on the drivers side right at the very top. Its a canister thats about 6 inches long and 3 or 4 inches in diameter it should be silver. and obviously will have two hoses running out of either side.

well that's what i would have thought too since the pump is mounted on the engine block, but it's not there and I also looked under the car near the tank expecting to see a transfer pump next to the tank, is it possible that it isnt there. btw the car is an '83 240dl

yeah i have the haynes manual for the 240 but we al know what kind of gaps they have(doesnt say anything about changing inner tie rods). The book shows both locations on the fire wall and next to the pump. Since there is a pump mounted to the engine and no filter mounted to the firewall(as would be normal) could it be at the top of the tank under the trunk, like I said before the underneath of the car is flat except for an indent where the tranny/drive train is located. ugggh going to continue searching maybe have to put in a aftermarket one
