I'm clueless about cars, but would like to know if someone can explain clearly - preferably with pictures - where the distributor cap is on my 1994 Volvo 940?

 

Well, there are four spark plugs on the right side of the motor, and there should be four wires coming out from them. Just follow the four wires back toward where they all lead, the back of the engine, and they all plug facing up into the distributort cap which is behind the head very close to the firewall. Another wire coming from the coil plugs into the cap from the bottom-hard to see but it's there. If need to take off the cap, there arethree 8mm bolts holding it in and they face toward the back. They are relatively hard to get off compared to most dist. caps.

 

Buy an 8mm ratchet wrench to make life a lot easier if you want to remove the cap
make life even more easier by tying the wrench around your wrist with a bit of string.
You can very easily drop it.
