They did not have them so in going to just change the connector. Is there a reason it would not self excite at 2,500 tho?

sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. you could try starting it, and bridging B+ to D+ with a cliplead or whatever, that should kick the alternator on.

If I do it with a multimeter will that work? From the b+ to d+?

And if I can do it with the multi do I have to hold it there or can I let go and test the battery after a certain time?

i'd use a cliplead, I dunno.

or just go ahead and fix the D+ wire so its done right. as i said, a .75" long piece of 3/8" wide brass strip the same thickness as a spade lug, drill a hole in one end for the D+ stud on the alternator, bend it at 45 degrees and use tin-snips or whatever to trim the other end down to like .25" wide so the D+ wire's spade will fit over it. done.

I did that and worked. Thank you so much I fixed it. I had no idea that the person before me put it on wrong and just followed what they did I am so sorry about that.
