Default clock/tach swap fail

Ive got a 86 240 GL. I pulled the nonworking clock out and installed a tachometer i pulled from the junkyard. It doesnt work either. I ran another wire to the coil thinking perhaps the signal wire was bad, still nothing. I now suspect that since the clock wasnt working before, there is some interal issuer in the dash cluster. I was wondering if anybody knew how what might be the problem. I was also thinking i could just hardwire the tach directly to the fuse box and ground, but im not sure what terminals i would need to connect. Any ideas? Thanks
